Samsung Display to expand OLED panel capacity

Samsung Display (SDC) is poised to expand production capacity for TV-use QD-OLED panels or IT-use OLED panels in South Korea, according to local media.

SDC has decided to withdraw from the LCD TV panel market and is phasing out production for hem.

SDC has replaced equipment for LCD TV panels with a 6G OLED (1,500 x 1,850mm) line to make small- to medium-size IT applications at its L7-2 plant, Chosun Biz reported. SDC has dismantled part of large-size LCD panel equipment at its L8-1 plant, with the space used to house a QD-OLED TV panel production line with month capacity of 30,000 glass substrates.

The QD-OLED panel production capacity at L8-1 is equivalent to one million 55- and 65-inch QD-OLED TVs a year, and SDC is looking to sell the LCD panel equipment to China-based BOE Technology or China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT), said Chosun.

Since there is still vacant space at L8-1, SDC will either expand QD-OLED TV panel production capacity or set up an 8.5G OLED (2,200 x 2,500mm) production line, because 8.5G is more economical than 6G in producing IT applications, Chosun said.
