LGD Plans to Expand OLED and POLED Business

According to the media in Korea, LGD anounced that while regrouping LCD business into more competitive market and segment, LGD will expand their OLED and mobile POLED (Plastic OLED) business in the future.

In 2020, LGD lost KRW 29.1 billion in operating profit. However, due to the profitability in Q3 and Q4, the annual loss had been significantly decreased. Looking into 2021, it is expected that LGD's OLED shipment will increase and acheive profitability.

As for the development strategy of OLED, owing to the diversity of products and the expansion of consumer type, LGD will be dedicated in broadening the market share and enhancing profitability. Besides, LGD will actively search for new market demand apart from TV application. LGD plans to strengthen their competitiveness in overseas area while reducing domestic production based on demand.

Last year, LGD's prduction base of OLED panel finished the construction. In July, Guangzhou line started to produce and its monthly capacity reached to 60 thousand pcs. Incuding the capacity of Paju line in Korea, LGD's OLED panel could acheive 140 thousand pcs. At present, LGD has suplied to 19 TV manufacturers worldwide.

It is worth mentioning that in February this year, LGD will add 750 million US dollars of funds to the factory in Vietnam to build an OLED factory and expand panel production capacity. According to the plan, LGD will start the OLED factory expansion project in March as soon as possible, and put it into operation in May.

For small and medium-sized products such as smartphones, LGD's development focuses on POLED. Last year, LGD's POLED panels for smartphones have also begun mass production, and the company plans to further enhance the POLED production system this year.

Compared to LCD, POLED is thinner and more durable. In addition, the materials of POLED and OLED screens are slightly different. The material of POLED is glass + plastic, and the material of OLED is glass. Compared with OLED, POLED is more flexible, lighter and thinner, which has more flexible plasticity, lower manufacturing cost, longer life span, and more drop resistance.
