Lextar Electronics is shipping mini LED backlight units (BLU) for use in 82-inch 8K and 4K LCD TVs unveiled by China-based Xiaomi in late September 2020, according to industry sources.
The BLU for the 8K TV consists of 15,360 mini LEDs based on POB (package on board) design, enabling 960 local dimming zones, 4,096 shades of gray, ultra-high contrast of 400,000:1 and brightness of 2,000nits, the sources said, adding because of cosgt concerns, the 4K TV is equipped with 240 local dimming zones.
Samsung Display supplies LCD panels and China-based New Optics (Guangzhou) assembles the two TV models, the sources noted. The 8K TV is equipped with 5G connectivity and priced at CNY49,999 (US$7,353), while the 4K model sells for CNY9,999, the sources said.
Lextar has shipped mini LED BLUs for a 17.3-inch gaming notebook recently launched by Micro-Star International (MSI), the sources indicated. Lextar has introduced new-generation I-Mini LED BLUs consisting of over 20% fewer mini LEDs than original models, with such BLUs to be used in 17.3-inch gaming notebooks and 34-inch gaming LCD monitors, the sources noted.
I-Mini LED BLUs are based on COB (chip on board) design which incurs higher production cost than POB, the sources said.
Lextar started volume production of I-Mini LED BLUs in third-quarter 2020 and expects mini LED backlighting and fine-pitch RGB mini LED displays to account for nearly 10% of 2020 consolidated revenues.
