LED chipmaker Opto Tech is likely to see the combined shipment volume of its LED chips and Si-based sensors decrease 4% in 2021, as it is scaling down the proportion of conventional LED components, according to company sources.

The shipment outlook results from its shift to focus more on sensor products for 3D sensing and VCSEL applications, said the sources.

Under the direction, shipments of LED chips will total 10.222 billion units in 2021, down 35.8% from a year earlier. However, shipments of Si-based sensors will increase 15.7% to 29.675 billion units.

Total LED and sensing chip shipments will reach 39.897 billion units in 2021, down 3.99% from 41.556 billion shipped in 2020, said the sources.

While reducing its overall LED chip shipments, Opto will continue to enhance its deployment in the red and IR (infrared) LED chip segments to ramp up its gross margin.
