BLU shipments to rebound in March

Coretronic and Radiant Opto-Electronics expect their backlight unit (BLU) shipments to rebound significantly in March, as factory operations have returned to normal after the Lunar New Year holidays.

Coretronic has reported revenues of NT$2.868 billion (US$101.47 million) for February, down 13% sequentially but up 56% on year. For January-February, sales totaled NT$6.161 billion, increasing 19% on year.

Shipments of energy-saving devices, mainly BLUs, reached 3.735 million units valued at NT$1.548 billion in February, down 11%, respectively, from the previous month.

But Coretronic saw its shipments of visual and image products grow 50% and 32% in terms of shipment volume and value, respectively, in February, mostly due to deferred shipments from a month earlier.

For March, Coretronics expects its combined BLU shipments for TV, monitor and notebook applications to grow over 10% from the previous month. Shipments of visual and image products, such as business-use projectors, will surge 50% sequentially.

Radiant saw its February revenues decline 19.6% on month but up 135.9% on year to NT$4.06 billion.

Its total BLU shipments declined 17.31% sequentially to 10.094 million units in February, including 5.617 million units for mobile devices, 4.299 million for IT applications, and 178,000 units for others.

The company is eyeing a rebound in shipments in March.
